When a transponder is interrogated, it sends an encoded signal with the four-digit code. The signal is referred to as a SQUAWK code and is the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It also serves to send an exact message to air traffic control in the case of an emergency or to alert air traffic controllers of changing weather conditions. It is common to hear a pilot instructed by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is an order for the pilots to press their transponder IDENT button. The ident button causes the aircraft blink on ATC radar screens which allows them to identify your aircraft on the screen.

There are 63 discrete codes that can be assigned to aircrafts, although there are certain reserved codes that restrict the use of a particular code in an area that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code blocks are configured using statistical analysis to limit the possibility that two aircraft with identical SQUAWK codes will be in the same area at any one time.

A transponder key is equipped with a special chip inside which contains the ID code. When the security light of a car comes on, this means that the ID code on the key isn't matching the code on the vehicle's computer. If this occurs, the vehicle's immobilizer will be disabled and won't start unless another key is used. To avoid this, Pop-A-Lock recommends that customers purchase only new transponder keys or have a professional locksmith like ours cut them for them.

PIN codes

A PIN code is a sequence of numbers (usually six or four digits) that can be used to gain access to a device or system. For instance, a smart phone has a code that the user sets when they purchase the device and must enter each time they wish to use it. PIN codes are used to secure ATM and POS transactions[1], secure access control (doors computers, cars),[2] and internet transactions.

While a longer PIN number may appear more secure however, there are ways to guess or hack a PIN code that is as small as four digits. It is recommended that the PIN must be at minimum six digits long, using the combination of letters and numbers to provide more security. Certain OEMs also require PIN codes for the aftermarket key programmer to ensure security, to prevent non-authorized persons from stealing data from modules.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth with the exception of alien cars (or whatever). The 17 digits of the VIN code are a combination of numbers and letters that can be decoded in order to reveal vital information about your vehicle or truck.

Modern automobiles contain a tremendous amount of information about their history and features, acting as digital libraries that are mobile. The key to unlocking this information is the VIN number. This lets you find out everything from whether your car was involved in a recall, to how many owners it has had.

A VIN number consists of different sections, each containing a specific piece of information. The first digit is, for instance, what kind of car it is, for instance as a pickup truck, or SUV. The second digit is the manufacturer. The third digit indicates the division of assembly for the car. The fourth through eighth digits indicate the model type, restraint systems type, body type and engine and transmission codes. The ninth digit serves as a check digit to prevent fraud. It confirms that the VIN is not altered.

In North America, 10th through 17th numbers of the VIN are referred to as the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS). The tenth number indicates the year of the vehicle's production, and the eleventh digit shows the assembly plant that made the vehicle. In addition the tenth through seventeenth numbers may include additional information, such as features or options that are installed in the vehicle.

The last six digits of the VIN code are a sequential serial number that uniquely identifies the car or truck. The final digit of the VIN code is also the check-digit. The remaining numbers have been transliterated into numbers. The first digit is given an 8 and each subsequent number increases in value by one, until the seventh digit is nine, which then becomes two. Then, the entire VIN will be reverted back to its original form by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is identical to the check digit then the VIN is valid.
